Review of You Got Me by Mercy Amare
Last week on my facebook page, I posted up 5 books that on Amazon, had no reviews, or very little reviews and asked my followers to tell me which one to read… (psh… by the way… go follow my facebook page.) So in the end I picked You Got Me by Mercy Amare and overall, I’m pretty happy I did. I absolutely love the cover. It’s beautiful. And for the most part, I enjoyed reading this. I do have a few minor complaints about it, but I encourage everyone who is looking for a book light in sex department (as in it’s not on every other page and pretty light in content when it does occur) and tends to lean a bit closer to the Young Adult books to pick it up.
Roxy is broken
Aiden wants to fix her
No matter how hard Roxy tries to overcome her past, she can’t. She writes on her arms to escape the pain, but nothing can soothe the ache that she feels.
Aiden didn’t go to college to meet girls, he came to play football. Too bad that it is impossible for him to stay away from Roxy.
After meeting on the roof, they instantly feel connected, but neither of them are ready for love.
You Got Me is a story about new beginnings, and finding love when you least expect it.
The Reviewing Romance Breakdown
This story line is really basic. It doesn't have a lot of things that are 'new' but what is there is written decently and it follows a predictable, but reliable path.
I liked Roxy. I would have liked to get to know her better. I think the potential to take these characters deeper is there and I'd love to see Mercy Amare really get even more raw and emotionally with them.
I liked Aiden, but I didn't connect with him. I felt like early in the book you were going to like him because he was different, he wasn't the typical college teenager, but the farther the book went on, I really lost all connection with him. It was almost as if it was because the story skipped some time and then when it picked back up it rushed to the end. There is a great period in there that is just missing with no other reason specifically and that could have been used to really broadcast Aiden's despair
I think this is insanely accurate in the aspects of how it's possible to meet someone out of the blue and fall for each other very fast and how Aiden wants to help Roxy but what I don't believe feels really real is how Aiden says over and over again, 'why won't she open up to me' when Roxy already has. I also don't feel like the way their actual coupling goes down is realistic.
Sex scenes are light with some graphic detail, but not a blow-by-blow action commentary, they are good, but honestly when they finally do it, I felt kinda bummed the way it happened. It almost degraded their relationship and what it was building up to, not enhanced it. In the end there was no real need for what the did just beforehand. It didn't play into any scenario following the act, just made them both seem immature, and frankly, given Aiden's history, his character should be standing stronger against it thus causing friction between him and Roxy.
I liked the writing style, what I didn't care for was how quickly POV's shifted. A few paragraphs here, maybe a page there. So quick it switched. You get used to it but at first it's quite a shock.
It's was pretty predictable. It's a reliable story and you know when the drama is coming.
The Happily Ever After
I liked the ending there was one part of it that I was like 'WTF' did he do that? but it all works out nicely.
